Menorca tourism rules: business limits under debate
Menorca’s tourism limits are under scrutiny: businesses, university representatives and officials meet at the Claustre del Carme in Maó, Menorca, on Thursday, 15 October, to debate how far rules should go. The University of the Balearic Islands is holding the congress on Menorca for the third year running. Talks continue on Friday.
Núria Torrent, the Menorca Island Council member responsible for land planning and tourism, says the island must balance economic activity with protection of its land and people’s rights. Tourism is a major part of Menorca’s economy, she says, but it also affects its landscape, culture and daily life. Any limits must serve the public interest, be proportionate and give people who invest, work and live on the island certainty about the law.
The programme covers rules for boat charter businesses and which decisions fall to the European Union, the Spanish state and autonomous communities. On Friday, the focus turns to destination advertising, brands and geographical names, unfair competition and the use of zones to regulate tourism.
