Spain: over 43,000 more jobless as tourism season ends
Spain counts more than 43,000 additional unemployed people in October as the tourism season ends. Yet the number of people in work reaches a record high. Labour and Social Economy Minister Yolanda Díaz links the rise in unemployment to the end of the season in a social media post on Wednesday, 4 November.
More than 22.6 million people are in work, 784,587 more than a year earlier. Despite the October increase, Spain’s total number of unemployed people is the lowest for that month since 2007, Díaz says.
The figures for women show the same contrast. More than 10.7 million women are registered with Social Security, a new high, while the number of unemployed women stands at 1,451,105 — the lowest October figure in 19 years. Díaz also says 43.3% of contracts signed in October are permanent, compared with less than 10% before the labour reform.
