Mallorca tourism: Balearics plan to curb supply

Mallorca and the rest of the Balearic Islands are moving to curb tourism supply, with visitor numbers no longer the sole measure of success. Tourism, Culture and Sport Minister Jaume Bauzá set out the policy at the Tourism Innovation Global Summit in Seville on Wednesday, 7 October. He said the government now puts more weight on tourism’s social and environmental impact and the value each visitor brings.

Bauzá said the aim is a better-quality tourism offer and a more balanced relationship between residents and visitors. He pointed to action against unlicensed tourism businesses, an agreement with cruise companies, and rules for vehicles entering the islands and for hire cars.

Money from the Sustainable Tourism Tax is also going towards restoring cultural heritage and improving infrastructure, he said. At the summit, which runs from 6 to 8 October, the Balearics have an 80-square-metre stand representing up to eight island businesses, made possible by a partnership between the Balearic Tourism Strategy Agency and Turistec.
