Mallorca: five people are under arrest after allegedly posing as tourists to steal wallets in Palma, Mallorca, and elsewhere on the island. Spain’s National Police detained two on Tuesday and three on Wednesday after learning the group was in central Palma. Police also link the suspected thefts to the Part Forana and Playa de Palma.

The suspects — two men and three women — are Romanian nationals. Police say they worked together, mainly targeting middle-aged and older tourists. In shops and streets, wallets and other valuables went missing without their owners noticing. Posing as tourists helped the group avoid attention, police say.

The five are being investigated on suspicion of belonging to a criminal group and committing several thefts. Palma’s National Police theft squad has about ten officers who focus on areas where unnoticed thefts are rising and pursue groups that specialise in stealing. In separate operations in recent days, the squad arrested five more people over similar incidents in Andratx, Mallorca, and Palma.
