Mallorca sells or reserves 1,896 tourist places

Mallorca’s island council has sold or reserved 1,896 tourist places, according to MÉS per Mallorca. On Wednesday, 23 September, the party’s candidate Miquel Oliver said the figures conflict with the council’s stated policy of limiting tourism. The council says the figure does not mean every place is already being actively marketed.

Of the total, 1,020 places were sold and 876 were reserved after the illegal-accommodation decree came into force. Oliver said keeping the overall cap unchanged does not show whether tourism pressure on Mallorca is falling, because places can return to the pool and be sold again.

He also said the council has no up-to-date study of Mallorca’s tourism carrying capacity and does not plan to review the suitable areas in its Tourist Intervention Areas Plan, known as PIAT.

Hundreds of accommodation cases await decisions

MÉS highlighted six council inspection campaigns covering 900 tourist stays. Just 106 received a favourable report and 203 an unfavourable one, while 691 cases are still awaiting a decision.

Oliver called on the council to say how long those files have been open and what has happened to the 203 cases with unfavourable reports. He also pointed to zero sanction cases listed over energy certificates.

The council reported 657 visits to tourist accommodation over water-saving systems. But, MÉS said, it did not specify how many tourist homes were checked directly or list any completed sanctions for that reason.

Renewals concentrate in Pollença and Alcúdia

The council has renewed tourist authorisations for 1,649 flats in apartment buildings, covering 6,730 places. Pollença, Mallorca, accounts for 1,929 of them and Alcúdia, Mallorca, for 1,602 — a combined 3,531 places.

Renewals also affect Santanyí, Felanitx, Son Servera, Andratx, Mallorca, and Calvià, Mallorca. Oliver said the council must explain what data and planning it is using to manage Mallorca’s tourist places while it has no current carrying-capacity study.
