Mallorca: longest tourist season, highest school dropout
Mallorca, Balearic Islands, has the longest tourist season in the archipelago, but it also has the highest level of early school leaving. A report presented in Palma on Friday, 23 October 2026, puts the two findings side by side. The Balearic Economic and Social Council’s review of 2025 also shows how sharply the number of people on the island rises in summer.
A longer season than its neighbours
Mallorca’s seasonality index changed by 26.8% between July and December, the smallest shift of any Balearic island. The change was 48.5% on Menorca, 78.6% on Ibiza and 153.8% on Formentera.
Mallorca received 13.6 million tourists in 2025, up 1.5% on the previous year. They spent €16,876 million. In August, an indicator measuring how many people were on the island reached 1,454,854 — 49.8% above its registered population. That was the smallest percentage increase among the islands.
The school gap
Mallorca has the Balearics’ highest level of early school leaving, according to the report. At age 15, 72% of pupils are in the school year that matches their age, compared with 81.4% on Menorca and 74.1% on Ibiza and Formentera together. Those figures measure pupils’ year groups, not the early school-leaving rate.
Across the Balearics, that rate was 15.2% in 2025, against 12.8% across Spain. The report identifies another gap on Mallorca: just 27.6% of its waste is collected separately, the lowest share among the islands.
