Balearics tourist tax funds €811m for 300 projects
Twenty-five German travel specialists have been briefed on the Balearics’ tourist tax, which funds nearly 300 projects worth more than €811 million. Tourism director Miquel Àngel Rosselló met the sellers in Cologne on Monday 21 and Frankfurt on Tuesday 22. The aim was to help agents explain what the sustainable tourism tax, known as ITS, pays for when customers book trips to the islands.
The Balearic Islands government says agents dealing directly with customers do not always have enough information to set out the tax’s purpose and value clearly. Rosselló also presented its rates, how it works and examples of tax-funded work on the islands.
More projects planned
Rosselló said the tax is a key tool in the government’s push for a more sustainable and balanced tourism model. It says the money helps protect the environment and heritage, while improving quality of life and the destination itself.
The 2026-2027 annual plan is set to add 65 projects, with funding of about €200 million. That would take the total beyond the nearly 300 projects now backed by the tax.
Tools for travel sellers
Agents were shown updates to the illessostenibles.travel website, including an ITS calculator and a virtual assistant designed to help them give customers clearer information.
The Cologne and Frankfurt meetings followed an event run in Madrid by the Balearic Islands Tourism Strategy Agency the previous week. The agency began training travel sellers in other source markets, including the UK, last year.
