Balearic housing: PSIB says €120m could have built homes
Palma, Mallorca: €120 million could have gone towards public housing across the Balearic Islands during this parliamentary term, the opposition PSIB-PSOE says. Its deputy general secretary, Rosario Sánchez, made the claim on 20 October after the first session of the general policy debate. She was responding to Balearic president Marga Prohens’s plan to use tourism tax money to tackle the housing crisis.
Prohens wants to change the law so money from the Sustainable Tourism Tax (ITS) can be used for housing. Sánchez said the president was bringing back a measure she had herself repealed. If it had been in place during this term, €120 million could have been invested in building public homes, she argued.
Sánchez also criticised Prohens for announcing an industry plan and air conditioning for schools towards the end of the term. She claimed health waiting lists were longer than ever despite a large budget. Sánchez presented PSIB-PSOE as an alternative, calling for limits on rents, more public housing and changes to how tourism is managed.
