Mallorca rent row: PSIB cites €800 to €1,500
In Palma, Mallorca, a claim that tenants who paid 800 euros in 2023 now pay 1,500 euros puts housing at the centre of a political row. PSIB spokesman Iago Negueruela makes the claim in the Balearic Parliament on 21 October 2026, the second day of its general policy debate. He calls on regional president Marga Prohens to change course.
A push for rent limits and buyer bans
Negueruela says Prohens’s housing policies have failed. He wants the Balearic Islands declared an area with a strained housing market so rents can be limited. He also proposes banning home purchases by funds he calls “vulture funds” and by people who do not live in the Balearics.
He challenges a measure Prohens announced on Tuesday to remove taxes on first-home purchases for under-36s. Young people cannot afford a mortgage, with or without those taxes, he argues.
Tourism promises and public services
Negueruela also accuses Prohens of failing to deliver a rise in the Sustainable Tourism Tax and a tax on hire cars. He says she announced both at the 2024 general policy debate.
His criticism extends to schools and healthcare. He says plans to cut healthcare waiting lists have not worked, day centres are finished but remain closed, and education centres lack air conditioning.
For Negueruela, the rent claim is part of a wider picture: he says people in the Balearics are worse off than three and a half years ago, citing living costs, pressure from tourism, transport and access to healthcare.
