Mallorca tourist tax backs 55 off-season sports events
Mallorca, in Spain’s Balearic Islands, gets tourist-tax funding for 55 off-season sports events as the regional government awards 450,000 euros to competitions across four islands. The Balearic government’s Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Sport said on 23 October 2026 that its Directorate-General for Sport had approved grants for 75 events taking place between 16 September 2026 and 30 June 2027. The money comes from the Sustainable Tourism Tax.
The other islands share the remaining grants: eight events on Menorca, ten on Ibiza and two on Formentera. On Mallorca, the East Mallorca Cup receives 20,137 euros and Challenge Peguera Mallorca receives 10,292 euros. The 2027 World Aquatics Open Water World Cup on Ibiza gets 17,868 euros, while the Formentera All Round Trail gets 828 euros.
Clubs, federations and other sports organisations run the events, which range from athletics and cycling to swimming, sailing and triathlon. They also include adapted and Paralympic sport. The government says the grants are part of its effort to connect tourism, culture and sport and spread economic activity beyond the peak season.
