Mallorca tourist, 75, hit with umbrella after theft

A 75-year-old German tourist recovered his wallet in Peguera, Calvià, Mallorca, on 18 September — then, police say, two women hit him and his wife with their hands and an umbrella. All four people suffered minor bleeding injuries and scratches to their arms and hands. The Guardia Civil arrested two women, aged 38 and 41, on suspicion of theft and assault.

The women, who are from Eastern Europe, are alleged to have taken the wallet unnoticed from the tourist’s back trouser pocket. He spotted what had happened and confronted them straight away. One of the women then threw the wallet to the ground, allowing him to get it back.

A Guardia Civil officer working at the nearby Foreign Citizen Service offices, known as SATE, saw the confrontation and stepped in to separate those involved. The officer called for a patrol from the Calvià station to help identify everyone at the scene.

Police checks found that one of the women had already been arrested several dozen times over similar property offences. Both women have been handed over to the courts.
