Mayor Jaime Martínez says traditional markets support local trade, keep neighbourhoods alive and preserve traditions. They are also part of a city’s history and places where neighbours meet. But he says they must be able to modernise and meet new challenges without losing what makes them distinctive.

Martínez says the Palma meeting has given those in the sector a chance to exchange ideas and share ways of tackling its challenges. He thanks traders, their associations and organisations such as Metrae for the daily work that keeps the markets going.
