Palma, Mallorca: Balearic president Marga Prohens mourns former Spanish employment and social security minister Fátima Báñez, who has died in a train crash in Urda, Toledo province. On 29 October, Prohens and Francina Armengol, president of Spain’s Congress of Deputies, send condolences to her family, friends and former colleagues. Báñez was travelling to Andalusia on one of the trains involved, Prohens says.

Prohens remembers their last conversation, on Día de la Hispanidad, and says Báñez always encouraged and supported her. Armengol recalls Báñez’s years as a member of parliament and as a minister.

The Balearic branch of the People’s Party pays tribute to Báñez’s public service. Carmen Planas, president of the Balearic business association CAEB, remembers working with her and also pays tribute to all the crash victims. Balearic labour minister Catalina Cabrer says it was an honour to have known Báñez.
