Toledo train crash: two carriages derail, line shut

Responsible for this content: Frank Menze

Two carriages of an Iryo train derail near Urda, in Spain’s Toledo province, on Wednesday morning, stopping services on the Madrid–Andalusia high-speed line. The crash happens shortly before 9.00 am on 28 October. Spain’s conservative People’s Party cancels all campaign events for its leaders across the country.

Early signs suggest a Renfe AVE high-speed train may have hit the Iryo train from behind, according to sources at Spain’s Ministry of Transport. Rail infrastructure operator Adif places the crash between Mora y Orgaz and Urda, at kilometre 118. It says both trains were on the Madrid–Seville route.

Adif and Renfe send staff to the scene. Renfe lets passengers affected by the line closure change or cancel their tickets. The People’s Party says it is waiting for more information.
