Mallorca water boost: €5.58m for 11 Tramuntana towns

Mallorca is to spend €5.58 million on water systems in 11 Serra de Tramuntana towns, funding new storage tanks, wells, pipes and leak detection.

The work covers drinking water, sewerage and rainwater systems, with the aim of shoring up supplies, building reserves and cutting losses from ageing networks. Water Minister Juan Manuel Lafuente presented the package on Thursday at the Raixa estate.

The money comes from the Sustainable Tourism Tax fund, known by its Catalan initials ITS. The Balearic Government says the schemes also prepare towns for possible future dry spells and heavy rain.

New water sources and bigger reserves

Banyalbufar will receive €351,202 to renew its drinking water, sewerage and rainwater facilities. A pipe from Font de la Menta to the ses Roquetes municipal tank is also planned, providing another source of supply and reducing reliance on water tankers when demand is high.

Bunyola gets €803,526 for a new 1,000-cubic-metre drinking-water tank, intended to increase local reserves and strengthen supplies to Hospital Joan March. Deià has €395,376 for improvements across its water system to reinforce supply and reduce its vulnerability during drought.

In Puigpunyent, €363,018 will pay for a 240-cubic-metre tank in Galilea and a new well at sa Mola Gran. Valldemossa is allocated €431,665 for a new borehole, a drinking-water treatment plant and a 400-cubic-metre regulating tank.

Estellencs receives €321,450 for pipes and wells linked to a future desalination plant, as well as its municipal supply network. Of that sum, €281,550 is for the plant’s pipes and wells, while €39,900 covers extraction and infiltration wells.

Leak checks, pipes and rainwater routes

The largest share, €1.05 million, goes to Pollença. The town will replace 4,862 household water meters, expand remote meter reading and leak detection, and renew 360 metres of the main supply pipe in Port de Pollença.

Fornalutx has €319,440 to replace about one kilometre of the pipe bringing water from sa Costera. It will also introduce smart network controls designed to cut breakdowns and water losses, while improving flow, pressure and leak detection.

Escorca will spend €346,064 modernising drinking-water facilities and improving rainwater collection in sa Calobra. Plans include digital meters, remote control of municipal tanks and wells, and drainage works for intense rainfall.

Esporles is allocated €422,330 to renew drinking water, sewerage and rainwater pipes in Darrera sa Paret, sa Pansa, Costeta and Pont streets. The affected streets will then be resurfaced.

Sóller receives €779,094 to extend its separate rainwater network and renew stretches of sewerage. The work is intended to keep more rainwater out of sewers and help the treatment plant cope during heavy rainfall.

Lafuente said the schemes were designed to tackle current weaknesses while helping the towns face future drought periods with stronger water reserves and networks.
