Mallorca trans care: nearly 40 accounts, no reply

Mallorca, 2 November: Nearly 40 accounts of distress at a hospital clinic put trans healthcare under scrutiny, the group Ben Amics says. It says the Balearic health department has not answered its request for a meeting, made a month ago when it accused a psychologist at the Gender Identity Clinic at Son Espases University Hospital on Mallorca of transphobia.

What the group alleges

Ben Amics alleges that the psychologist has for years treated trans lives as an illness and withheld information from people attending the clinic. It says she leads them to believe they can get hormone treatment only through the clinic and questions their identities.

According to Ben Amics, the psychologist and the Balearic Health Service, known as IBSalut, say attending the clinic is voluntary. But the group says trans people must go through it to get a referral to endocrinology.

Ben Amics presses for a meeting

Ben Amics president Tatiana Casado says the government has failed to take the accounts seriously. The group has urged Balearic president Marga Prohens to stop ignoring its concerns, while Casado is again asking the health department to meet Ben Amics and seek a solution.

The group says it is still collecting accounts of obstacles trans people say they face when they attend the clinic. It offers support to anyone who needs it or wants to share an experience, and says no trans person should face reprisals for reporting transphobia there.
