Mallorca: Palma transformer fire leaves 139 without power
A transformer fire in Palma, Mallorca, cuts power to 139 people on Monday afternoon. On Calle Reina Constança in the Foners district, witnesses report thick smoke and explosions inside a home. The transformer lies below a ground-floor property, where Palma firefighters can reach it only through access chambers.
Palma Local Police say the first emergency call comes at 15.57. The cause of the fire remains unclear. Firefighters say heavy rain may have soaked the transformer, but they have not confirmed that it started the fire.
Electricity supplier Gesa switches off the transformer so firefighters can put out the blaze. The fire causes no property damage and no building needs to be evacuated. Nobody is in danger during the incident, though medical staff attend to one neighbour at the scene.
