Mallorca: €9.85m transport aid starts rolling out

The Balearic Government has approved the first proposed transport grants this week, under a €9.85 million package covering Mallorca and the other islands. The first batch includes 265 self-employed goods hauliers and 57 bus companies or self-employed bus operators. The support is intended to soften higher fuel costs and the economic effects of the war in the Middle East.

The Directorate-General for Mobility opened applications in early July. It received 1,440 applications across the different schemes, the Housing, Territory and Mobility Ministry said.

First grants for hauliers and buses

There are seven funding calls for businesses and self-employed workers using vehicles for freight and passenger transport. They cover lorries, buses, taxis and hire cars with drivers, known as VTCs.

Goods transport generated the largest number of applications, with 595. Taxi operators submitted 553, while 78 came from businesses carrying their own goods and 61 from occasional passenger bus transport.

Fuel costs and vehicle scrappage

Six million euros of the package is set aside to offset fuel price rises in goods transport. Occasional passenger bus services are allocated €750,000, taxis €500,000 and VTCs €100,000.

Another €2.5 million is available to scrap transport vehicles, specifically lorries and buses. That scheme received 122 applications, while VTC operators made 31 applications.

The funding forms part of Decree Law 1/2026 of 1 April, which introduced urgent measures to ease the economic impact of the war in the Middle East. Applications for scrapping heavy goods vehicles and passenger buses remained open until Friday 11 September.
