Spain’s travel agency workers face hours and sick pay row

Responsible for this content: Frank Menze

Travel agency workers across Spain face a proposed six-month limit on sick-pay supplements: their union is also fighting changes to working hours. At the latest talks on 8 October, CCOO rejected the proposals in their current form. In a dispute reported from Madrid on 9 October, it said it needed the full draft of the national travel agency agreement before offering alternatives.

Hours and sick pay at stake

CCOO says the proposal for irregular working hours does not clearly define which parts of the workforce it would cover. That could leave employers with too much control over staff time, the union warns. It also opposes a proposal for irregular hours covering 33% of guides’ working time.

The union says a six-month cap on the supplement paid during temporary incapacity would hurt people with long-term illnesses. It also rejects a plan to limit OL, a job classification in the agreement, to level 5.

Union asks to see the full draft

CCOO has not ruled out negotiating those points. But it wants details of a separate pay proposal, saying these will determine whether agreed rises show up in wages. It also wants protections for LGBTI staff written into the agreement so they apply across the sector rather than depending on individual employers.

The Confederación Española de Agencias de Viajes, the employers’ association, has promised to send a complete draft. The next negotiating meeting is scheduled for 28 October.
