Trepucó dig begins: €658,351 for threatened ruins

Work has begun at Trepucó on Menorca to protect structures in its western sector that risk shedding parts or collapsing. On Wednesday, 23 September, the Island Council of Menorca started excavation, restoration and strengthening work at the Talayotic settlement. The Cardoner-Catarqueòlegs consortium is carrying out the €658,351 project.

The work covers a talayot, a structure with an internal passage, as well as part of a wall bastion and a domestic area. The site, near the Bintaufa sports area, was partly explored by the Museum of Menorca in the 1980s.

The council says the excavation will be completed and the area restored to gather new archaeological information and improve its conservation. Structural strengthening will focus on the talayot and neighbouring remains at risk of falling or collapse.

Once those works are finished, a visitor route will be created through the western sector. It is intended to provide safe access while protecting the archaeological remains and adding the area to Trepucó’s public visiting circuit.
