Ibiza hosts Spain’s final international triathlon event of 2026 on 1 November: the European Cup in Santa Eulària des Riu, in the Balearic Islands, closes a season that three-time world champion Mario Mola says has strengthened the country’s hopes of an Olympic podium in Los Angeles in 2028.

The results behind Mola’s optimism

Spain’s mixed relay team won bronze in Quiberon, France, in June. Ana Carballo, Pelayo González, Marta Pintanel and Izan Edo gave the country its best result yet in a mixed relay at the World Triathlon Championship Series.

There were individual successes too. David Cantero won the World Cup race in Lanzarote and reached the podium in Weihai, China. Roberto Sánchez Mantecón took European bronze in Tarragona. Mola says the challenge now is to build on those results and keep the relay team’s progress going.

Why the Ibiza race matters

The European Cup rounds off an international calendar that has included ten other events across eight of Spain’s autonomous communities. Mola says those races give Spanish athletes opportunities to compete and help bring elite triathlon to a wider public.

As an adviser to the Spanish Triathlon Federation, he also wants to understand top athletes’ needs better and encourage more people to take up the sport. For Mola, the Ibiza event is both the end of this season and a chance to support the next generation.
