TUI Palma staff face 22 unpaid days, union claims

Workers at TUI Group company Ultramar Express Transport in Palma, Mallorca, have been suspended for up to 22 days without work or pay, according to trade union CCOO. On Friday, 11 September, the union accused the company’s management of a systematic campaign of anti-union pressure and harassment. It says workers and union representatives have had fundamental rights breached.

CCOO says managers favour the smaller UGT union section and use it to undermine the CCOO majority on the works council. The union says staff who do not follow company instructions face direct reprisals, including disciplinary cases it considers unjustified.

Several workers and CCOO supporters were recently suspended for up to 22 days without pay, the union says. It argues the allegations used against them have no legal basis or real significance.

Workers say they took their complaints to TUI Group’s global Human Resources department, but the cases were passed back to the local managers named in the complaints. CCOO also says the company’s internal harassment procedure offers no neutral safeguards because those accused of harassment handle and decide the complaints.

With internal talks blocked, CCOO and the workers’ legal representatives have started steps towards court action and a complaint to the Labour Inspectorate.
