The Universitat de les Illes Balears (UIB) in Palma, Mallorca, will add three degree courses and three master's programmes in the 2026-2027 academic year. The regional Department of Education and Universities announced the expansion on 18 August 2026 and said it would fund the investment needed to introduce the courses.

The new undergraduate options are Marine Sciences, a combined Mathematics and Physics degree, and Agro-food Sciences Engineering, which will replace the current Agro-food and Rural Engineering degree.

New undergraduate courses

Marine Sciences will have 35 places for new entrants and will cover the study and management of marine and coastal environments across subjects including biology, geology, chemistry, physics and technology. Its introduction is budgeted at €5.53 million through 2030, followed by annual costs of €1.54 million.

The combined Mathematics and Physics degree will offer ten entry places. Funding is set at €475,976 through 2031, when its first cohort is expected to graduate, with yearly costs of €204,058 thereafter.

Agro-food Sciences Engineering will begin in 2026-2027, preparing students for work in agricultural engineering and areas including crop improvement, sustainable technology, water and energy management, and agroecological systems.

Master's programmes and further plans

UIB will introduce a master's degree in the Study and Management of Terrestrial Ecosystems in the Face of Global Change. Run by the university's Biology Department, the 25-place programme will focus on the effects of global change on Mediterranean ecosystems.

A new Erasmus Mundus master's programme in Health Promotion and Wellbeing Across the Lifespan will be delivered with universities in Portugal and Serbia. The two-year, classroom-based course will have 25 places, while the Hygieia consortium has received €4 million in European funding.

The master's degree in Theoretical Chemistry and Computational Modelling has been updated with artificial intelligence and molecular simulation content. Seventeen Spanish universities, coordinated by the Autonomous University of Madrid, will take part in the English-language programme, which lasts one academic year, carries 60 ECTS credits and has 40 places, including two at UIB.

For 2027-2028, the department and UIB also plan degrees in Architecture and Mechanical Engineering with a Nautical Engineering specialism. Work is also under way on a STEM degree for future teachers and a combined Catalan Language and English Language degree.
