Mallorca UIB meals drop to €6.85, architecture planned

Average UIB meal prices in Palma are set to fall from €7.55 to €6.85 after Balearic president Marga Prohens announced the change on Friday, 4 September. She made the announcement at the University of the Balearic Islands' opening for the 2026-2027 academic year. An architecture degree is also planned.

New courses and medical faculty

Prohens said the university is also due to add Mechanical Engineering, alongside combined degrees in Spanish Language and Literature, Catalan Language and Literature, and English Studies.

The Balearic government's Council of Ministers has also authorised construction of the future Faculty of Medicine.

Record budget and more space

The UIB has more than €200 million available this year, its highest-ever budget and 35% above the 2023 figure under the 2023-2026 programme agreement. Prohens said a new agreement, due to be signed before the end of the year, will provide the funds needed for the university's goals.

Construction of a new Faculty of Sciences module is due to begin in the first quarter, backed by €17 million from the Balearic government. Procedures have also started to make two plots available at ParcBit for a new engineering building.

UIB rector Jaume Carot said he was disappointed that the university had dropped out of the Shanghai ranking of the world's top 1,000 universities. He called for more space and an ambitious new funding agreement to give the institution stability and confidence.
