Mallorca housing hunt costs two students medical places

On Mallorca, in the Balearic Islands, two students give up their places to study medicine because they cannot find housing. Antoni Bennàsar, dean of the Faculty of Medicine at the University of the Balearic Islands, reports the withdrawals in Palma on Thursday, 8 October 2026. He also brings better news from the 2026 MIR exam: 24 of the university’s 55 graduates who took it rank in the top 25%.

The MIR exam determines who gets a place to train as a resident doctor. This year, 15,092 people competed for 9,276 places. Seven of the university’s graduates reached the top 10%. The share reaching the top 25% has risen from 30% in the faculty’s first graduating class to 43.6% this year.

At least 17 of the new doctors have stayed to work in the Balearic Islands, Bennàsar says. But this year’s two withdrawals show a different obstacle facing the faculty: students can win a place on its medicine course and still be unable to take it up on Mallorca. Some 78% of this year’s new students come from the islands.
