Mallorca ultrasound training targets faster diagnoses
Mallorca’s patients could get quicker answers about their care: around 150 health professionals attend ultrasound training at Son Espases University Hospital on Friday, 30 October. The second primary care ultrasound meeting brings together staff from family medicine, nursing, physiotherapy and paediatrics. The Balearic Islands Department of Health says the aim is to help health centres make more decisions about patients’ care.
The day includes a lecture on ultrasound in nutrition and two blocks of practical workshops. According to the department, clinical ultrasound scans can help staff narrow down a diagnosis and decide sooner whether a patient needs further tests or an appointment with a specialist.
Every health centre and physiotherapy unit on Mallorca now has at least one clinical ultrasound scanner. Primary care emergency services and teams providing care at home also have portable scanners.
Training continues beyond the meeting. Since 2023, Mallorca has had a dedicated ultrasound training room with seven scanning stations and 17 trainers. Through the EcoCoach programme, experienced staff work alongside colleagues during appointments with patients. From January to August this year, 205 professionals took part in 61 such sessions across 21 health centres. The day ends with a talk by Josep Corcoll, a professor who helped introduce ultrasound into primary care.
