Mallorca power link: 570-metre line to go underground

Near Alcúdia, Mallorca, Spain, 403 metres of overhead power line cross the site of a planned converter station: Red Eléctrica is due to begin moving the line underground in the second half of October. The company will replace that stretch with a 570-metre underground section between the Sant Martí and Alcúdia substations. The move will clear space for a station serving a proposed second electricity link between mainland Spain and the Balearic Islands.

The Balearic Islands government has given the line change a favourable environmental assessment. The required planning and construction approvals are in place, along with a declaration of public utility. Red Eléctrica says it has reached agreements with all the affected landowners.

This is the first part of the proposed second link to receive a favourable environmental assessment. The wider project, known as PenBal 2, is still under environmental review by Spain’s Ministry for Ecological Transition and Demographic Challenge. A second public consultation has ended following a change to its onshore route, agreed by a working group that included the Balearic Islands government, the ministry, the Council of Mallorca, Alcúdia council, local residents’ representatives and Red Eléctrica.
