Spain unemployment rises despite 92,327 more contributors
Spain gains 92,327 Social Security contributors in September, but 23,587 more people register as unemployed. Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez calls it the “best September” for Social Security in a post on X on 2 October 2026. The figures tell two sides of the same month.
An average of 22,437,553 people paid into Social Security in September, up from August. It was the biggest increase for any September on record.
Registered unemployment also rose from August, taking the total to 2,379,505. Even after that rise, Spain’s jobless total was at its lowest for a September since 2007.
Sánchez put the increase in contributors at 93,327 in his post. The reported monthly average rose by 92,327. The figures supplied do not explain the difference.
