Mallorca university fire: classes back after roof blaze

Mallorca’s university resumes classes on Monday, 28 September: a roof fire at its Arxiduc Lluís Salvador building in Palma, Mallorca, moves lessons from one tourism classroom. Teaching is otherwise running normally at the Faculty of Tourism and the Balearic Islands School of Hospitality, the University of the Balearic Islands says. The fire was detected on the roof at around 15.00 on Saturday, 26 September.

Firefighting work affected one classroom. Lessons planned there for Monday have moved to another room in the same building.

The cause is still under investigation. Early signs point to flammable building materials stored on the roof for work on the hospitality school’s kitchens. Investigators consider a link to the solar panels unlikely; none was directly hit by the flames.

The fire spread to the roof’s waterproofing layer and a propane gas pipe, producing a jet of flame. Maintenance teams from the university and the hospitality school shut off the gas and electricity, preventing the incident from growing. Palma firefighters, the National Police and Palma’s local police also responded.
