Palma drivers without licences face court

Two men caught driving without licences in Palma, Mallorca, on 14 September now face fast-track court. The owners who lent them their motorcycles have also been summoned. One of the drivers was arrested after police found an outstanding detention order against him.

Palma Local Police sent the cases to court after checking records and taking statements. Officers stopped the first motorcycle at 19.05 in Calle Antoni Marquès. The 21-year-old rider had no licence and was wanted in connection with an earlier case.

He initially gave officers false details and showed only a photo of his identity document on his phone. Police issued an administrative penalty over the identification. The 26-year-old owner, his sister, later told officers she knew he had no licence but had allowed him to use the motorcycle.

At 19.55, officers from the Preventive Action Group, known as GAP, saw another motorcycle being ridden erratically in Calle Manacor. Its 33-year-old rider admitted he had no licence. The 30-year-old owner, travelling as a passenger, said he had lent him the motorcycle knowing this.

Police removed the second motorcycle because it was uninsured. The vehicle involved in the first stop was taken to the municipal depot at La Riera.

All four people have been called to appear before the duty investigating section of the Court of First Instance. Palma Local Police said knowingly handing a vehicle to someone without a licence can also be a criminal offence.
