Mallorca: union says teachers owed two months' tutor pay
In Palma, Mallorca, the SIAU union says teachers are owed two months of tutor pay: their September and October allowances have not arrived. On Thursday, 29 October, it accused the Department of Education and Universities of systematically mistreating public-school teachers.
Senior department officials have received their expenses and allowances on time, SIAU says. But a rise in tutor pay promised in September last year has still not been applied, it adds.
Two teachers, one allowance
Some school management teams require two teachers to share tutor duties but officially recognise only one of them, according to SIAU. The union says some teams have even suggested drawing lots to decide who receives the allowance, then splitting the money equally. It calls the practice unacceptable and unlawful.
Music teachers and teachers of other subjects are also carrying out tutor duties without recognition or pay, the union says.
Union demands back pay
SIAU says it has told education minister Antoni Vera about the co-tutor arrangements. It also criticises the education inspectorate for failing to ensure the practices stop.
The union wants the missing allowances paid immediately and the promised rise applied retrospectively. It is also calling for recognition of every teacher who performs tutor duties and an end to the disputed co-tutor arrangements.
