Urda train crash sparks call for Spain-wide safety plan

Two serious crashes on the same high-speed line in less than a year: the latest, in Urda in Spain’s Toledo province, prompts a call for a national infrastructure investment plan. On 29 October 2026, the Spanish tourism association Mesa del Turismo urges the government to fund work that keeps essential services safe and running. It says the accidents have shaken public confidence and harmed Spain’s image as a holiday destination.

The association’s president, Carlos Garrido, says the earlier crash at Adamuz should have been the last of its kind. He wants those responsible held to account, but says the deeper problem also needs fixing: people in Spain and tourists should not be afraid to use high-speed trains.

The group wants urgent investment beyond transport, including the hydroelectric network and communications. It says reliable, safe services are essential to tourism and to Spain’s wider economy.
