In Palma, Mallorca, the Urda train crash prompts a call for answers: Francina Armengol urges parties to act responsibly but will not say whether transport minister Óscar Puente should resign. Speaking to reporters on Monday, 2 November, the president of Spain’s Congress of Deputies and secretary-general of the PSIB was asked about the People’s Party’s decision to join the court case over the crash and about Puente’s future.

Armengol expressed support and respect for the victims and their families. She called for investigations to establish what happened, and for parties to seek ways to prevent another such accident.

Puente will appear before the Permanent Deputation of the Congress of Deputies to give explanations, Armengol said. She described the appearance as unusual, saying nothing like it had happened since the 1980s and referring to the 1981 coup attempt. As Congress president, she said, it was not her place to decide whether Puente should quit. In her view, he had faced questions, given explanations and taken steps through his ministry.
