In Palma, Mallorca, Balearic engineers say finding and helping people must take priority after Wednesday’s train crash in Urda, Toledo province. On 28 October, the Balearic branch of the College of Civil, Canal and Port Engineers warns against speculation and offers condolences to affected families.

The branch says emergency teams and the equipment they need must be coordinated effectively. It wants as many people as possible located and given help.

The college’s national body calls the crash extremely serious. It demands greater safety across Spain’s railway system and an immediate improvement in how it is managed. Its president, Ricardo Martín, has convened a committee to examine the causes and seek urgent fixes. The college has also offered to work with Spain’s Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility and Adif.
