In Palma, Mallorca, the People’s Party says Wednesday’s train crash in Urda, in the province of Toledo, must have consequences. Its transport spokesman, Héctor Palencia, makes the call on Monday, 2 November, after the party announces it will join the legal case over the crash.

Asked about responsibility, Palencia accuses Spain’s central government of having “only words” and failing to manage the country. He says all Spaniards suffer the consequences of that failure.

Palencia declines to say whether the crash might sway undecided voters. The People’s Party is not focused on “electoral maths”, he says. Instead, he says it wants to offer a plan for governing and solutions to the country’s problems, and asks people to trust its proposals.
