Alaró row as only four PP councillors attend urgent meeting
Only four of the PP's nine governing councillors were physically in the chamber for an urgent council meeting in Alaró, Mallorca, on Monday, the Socialist Municipal Group has said. The opposition party criticised the PP-led administration on Thursday over its handling of the extraordinary session. It said the governing team itself chose the time, format and urgency of the meeting.
Socialist spokesman Andreu Vidal said opposition councillors also have jobs and commitments outside the town hall. When an urgent meeting is called in the morning, he said, they must change their schedules, seek permission and do what they can to fulfil their duties as councillors.
Vidal said he could not understand why some of those who called the meeting were not physically present. The Socialists said the mayor had argued that morning sessions avoid disrupting municipal staff, but replied that council meetings are an institutional duty. If an issue is urgent enough for an extraordinary meeting, Vidal said, members of the municipal government should do everything possible to attend in person.
