Mallorca and Menorca residents gain 2,222 car permits for Formentera in the Balearic Islands: the island closes its regulated vehicle season on Wednesday, 30 September, with 5,393 applications refused. The Formentera Island Council says it handled 48,038 applications and approved 40,988. Another 1,657 were incomplete or still awaiting documents.

Who gets a permit

Visitors received 8,317 permits for cars and 1,287 for motorcycles. Residents of Mallorca and Menorca also received 572 motorcycle permits. For Ibiza residents, the council approved 6,282 cars and 1,223 motorcycles.

Checks and changes ahead

For the first time this year, the council checked certain permits for longer stays. It has revoked 122 permits linked to Ibiza residents and seasonal workers after finding that the vehicles had not been driven on Formentera for 15 consecutive days.

The council also wants changes to Formentera’s rules considered as Mallorca’s proposed vehicle-control law goes through parliament. It proposes no separate vehicle cap for seasonal workers and one vehicle permit per second home. It also wants to consider removing quotas for travel by residents between the Balearic Islands, but only with safeguards against an uncontrolled rise in vehicle numbers on Formentera.
