Mallorca hospital opens 34 beds ahead of virus rise
Palma, Mallorca: Verge de la Salut Hospital opens 34 beds on Monday, 19 October, freeing space at Son Espases University Hospital for patients who need more intensive care. The Balearic Islands Health Department says Verge de la Salut, which is attached to Son Espases, will care for patients whose needs it can better meet. They include people with several conditions whose health has suddenly worsened and those waiting for intermediate or long-term care.
The patients will come from Son Espases’ respiratory medicine and internal medicine departments. Moving them gives Son Espases more room to handle an expected rise in admissions linked to respiratory viruses. In previous years, the extra beds did not open until January, when illnesses such as flu, Covid-19 and bronchiolitis increased.
Son Espases plans to hire 21 nurses, 20 nursing assistants, six hospital porters, three physiotherapists, a social worker and one specialist each in respiratory medicine and internal medicine. This year’s care arrangements will also involve nurses who coordinate patient cases, social workers and staff in physical medicine, rehabilitation and physiotherapy.
While Verge de la Salut was closed over the summer, its rooms and bathrooms were improved. Doors were renewed, and baths were replaced with shower trays.
