52 beds for people with chronic illnesses are planned at the former Verge del Toro Hospital in Maó, on the island of Menorca. The Balearic Health Service put the stalled revamp back out to tender on Friday, 6 November. The work is estimated to cost 28.8 million euros and is expected to take 18 months.

Work began in 2020 but stopped in 2024 at the construction company’s request. Before issuing a new tender, the health service had to update the project and check that it met current technical and legal requirements.

The historic building is planned to provide intermediate care, outpatient treatment and a day hospital for assessment and rehabilitation. It will also offer palliative care and help for patients with complex needs. The Balearic government says the centre will help Menorca’s health service respond to growing demand linked to an ageing population and chronic illness.
