Mallorca vets push for role in Balearic health system
In Palma, Mallorca, vets are pressing to bring their clinical work into the Balearic health administration after a unanimous vote in the regional parliament. The Balearic College of Veterinary Surgeons (Covib) renewed its call on Wednesday, 4 November. Vets are already recognised by law as health professionals, the college says, but it wants that status reflected in public health policy.
On 27 October, the Balearic Parliament asked the regional government to agree measures with Covib. The aim is to place veterinary clinical work under the Health Department for administrative purposes, while keeping the agriculture and environment departments involved. The resolution also calls on the regional government to seek a stronger place for vets within Spain’s Ministry of Health.
Covib president Ana Sancha says the vote is a chance to turn political support into action. The college points to vets’ work monitoring diseases that can pass from animals to people and protecting food safety. It argues that closer ties with health services could improve coordination and the prevention of health risks. The regional government and Covib still have to agree what the changes would involve.
