Menorca visitor car cap moves closer next season

Menorca is moving towards a limit on visitor vehicles arriving next season, while cars belonging to island residents would be exempt under the proposed change.

The Balearic Parliament is set to consider an amendment to the Menorca Biosphere Reserve Law on Tuesday. The PP and the Menorca Island Council want it handled urgently, saying the measure could be in force next season.

The island administration approved the proposal only two weeks ago, according to council president Adolfo Vilafranca. He says the change is needed to give Menorca a firm legal basis for controlling vehicles coming onto the island.

Rules still needed for the cap

Vilafranca says the current law leaves out key details needed to run a vehicle limit. These include permits, exemptions, work with ferry operators, inspections and penalties.

The amendment is intended to put those rules in place so that the restriction can operate with legal certainty. PP parliamentary deputy Jordi López said the proposal came directly from the Menorca Island Council, which should decide how it manages mobility and arriving vehicles.

Residents would stay outside the limit

For the PP, the central point is that Menorca residents should not be caught by the cap. Vilafranca said the version approved by the previous left-wing coalition had not separated residents' vehicles from those of visitors.

He has called on opposition parties to back the amendment in the Balearic Parliament. Més per Menorca voted against it at island council level, arguing it was unnecessary, but has since said it will support the change in Parliament.
