A €30,000 poetry prize is heading for a political challenge on the Spanish island of Mallorca: Vox plans to raise its objection to Sebastià Alzamora’s National Poetry Prize at the next full meeting of the island council, the Consell de Mallorca. The party announced the move on 8 November 2026.

David Gil, Vox’s deputy spokesperson on the council, says Alzamora has repeatedly made disparaging remarks about Spain, its institutions and its history. Gil points to Alzamora’s description of a speech by King Felipe VI as “infamous” and of the trial linked to the ‘Procés’ as a “pantomime”. He also cites Alzamora’s claim that the verdict confirmed Spain had political prisoners and exiles.

Gil says freedom of expression also gives Vox the right to question decisions by public bodies. He objects to the state honouring Alzamora with the prize and €30,000 in public money. Whether the council will support Vox’s initiative remains unclear.
