Mallorca budget talks loom: Vox waits for spending cap
Vox says it will join talks on the Balearic Islands’ 2027 budget, but will not say whether it backs the plan until it sees the spending cap. Parliamentary spokeswoman Manuela Cañadas made the position clear after meeting regional president Marga Prohens in Palma, Mallorca, on Friday, 4 September.
Prohens told her that the Balearic government will first put forward a spending cap — the maximum it plans to spend. The Parliament must approve that limit before a budget can be drawn up for 2027.
Cañadas said Vox needs to see where the money is earmarked, what could be cut and what might need more funding before taking a view. She said the party would come to the table as a matter of responsibility towards people across the islands.
Vox is also heading towards the Balearic elections, due in May 2027, without naming its candidate for regional president. Cañadas said the party usually reveals candidates only when Parliament is close to being dissolved.
She named Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez as Vox’s main opponent on the road to the vote. Cañadas also called him a “traitor” and accused him of withholding information about a possible mass arrival in the Balearics.
Sánchez had told Spain’s Congress that the National Police had not warned, a week earlier, of a high risk in Ceuta. He confirmed that a report existed, but said it referred only to sea arrivals on mainland Spain and the Balearics.
