Mallorca, Balearic Islands: Vox wants all taxes on first-home purchases scrapped across the islands. At a press conference in Palma on Monday, 19 October, the party’s spokeswoman in the Balearic Parliament, Manuela Cañadas, calls on regional president Marga Prohens to put housing and irregular migration at the centre of the coming general policy debate.

First homes and rent

Cañadas says only 8 per cent of young people have been able to live independently. Rent costs more than people earn, she says, arguing that small tax cuts will not be enough.

What Cañadas says migration costs

More than 6,700 migrants have arrived by boat in the Balearic Islands this year, according to Cañadas. She says the islands are caring for almost 1,000 unaccompanied foreign minors at a cost of €8,000 each per month. She puts the annual cost at around €100 million and argues that the money could instead go towards housing.

Heavy-rain warnings

Vox also urges people in the Balearic Islands to take care as the weather system Adam affects the islands amid warnings of heavy rain. The party offers support to those affected by the storm in the Balearics and the Valencian Community, and thanks Spain’s Military Emergency Unit for its work to limit the impact.
