Mallorca Vox seeks more forces in Ceuta and Melilla
Mallorca, Spain: Vox is taking a call for permanent military and police reinforcements in Spain’s North African cities of Ceuta and Melilla to the Consell de Mallorca, the island council, on Thursday. The party announced the motion on Monday, 5 October. It wants the Spanish government to strengthen security in both cities.
More forces and border surveillance
The motion calls for more personnel and equipment, with stronger surveillance on land, at sea and in the air. Vox also wants better intelligence and early-warning systems, a stronger Spanish Navy presence nearby and better protection for ports and other key infrastructure.
At the borders, it proposes extending the Tarajal and Benzú breakwaters in Ceuta and upgrading surveillance technology around Melilla’s perimeter. It also calls for a joint command to coordinate the agencies working on Spain’s external borders in North Africa.
Support for those on duty
Vox wants better accommodation, rest periods, legal protection and health support for personnel posted to the two cities. It also wants the Guardia Civil, National Police and armed forces recognised as high-risk professions.
Toni Gili, Vox’s spokesman on the island council, said border security should not be left to improvisation. The proposal goes before the council on Thursday; the changes it seeks would be for Spain’s central government to make.
