Mallorca general strike: Vox targets UGT and CCOO
Mallorca faces a general strike on 11 November, and Vox is taking its fight with the UGT and CCOO unions to the island council. In a statement on Friday, 6 November, the party said it would bring a motion to the Mallorca Island Council (Consell de Mallorca) next Thursday, accusing the unions of using the strike for political ends. The walkout is set for two days before campaigning begins for the 29 November general election.
Vox says the strike is aimed at the opposition. Its island council spokesman, Toni Gili, acknowledges that lost purchasing power, insecure work and difficulty finding a home affect thousands of Mallorca families. But he argues that workers’ problems are being used for electoral gain.
Gili also warns that a general strike could hurt the island’s economy. Transport, mobility and services are vital to it, he says, while small businesses, self-employed people and workers could suffer if their activities grind to a halt.
The motion calls for greater transparency and independence from UGT and CCOO, which Vox says receive substantial public subsidies. The council is due to hear the proposal next Thursday.
