Mallorca housing crisis: Vox wants more land to build

Mallorca’s young people, families and local workers are finding it harder to buy or rent a home, Vox says: the party wants more land made available for housing. On Friday, 2 October, it said it would bring a motion to the Mallorca Island Council next Thursday, calling for better access to homes and stronger protection for private property.

Vox spokesman on the council Toni Gili says demand far outstrips the supply of homes. He accuses both the Socialists and the conservative People’s Party of promising solutions without delivering enough housing.

The motion asks the Balearic government and Spain’s central government to increase the supply of subsidised and affordable homes by reviewing current restrictions and requirements. Vox also wants more land made available, less bureaucracy and tax pressure, faster building permits and greater legal certainty for property owners.

The party opposes a proposal by MÉS per Mallorca to restrict second-home purchases to people who live on the island. Gili argues that it would limit Mallorcans seeking a second home on their own island. He says Vox also wants migration policy matched to what the island can accommodate. The council is due to debate the motion next Thursday.
