Mallorca: Vox housing priority for Spaniards fails

Vox’s push to give Spaniards priority for housing support has failed in the Balearic Parliament in Palma, Mallorca, on Thursday. The party was the only group to back the proposal in the Social Affairs Committee. It sought preferential access for Spaniards to social housing, protected homes, tax breaks and all other housing-related aid.

Vox also stood alone in calling for the repatriation of every migrant without regular status.

PP backs selected parts of Vox motion

The PP did support two other measures in the non-binding motion. One calls for the repeal of Royal Decree 180/2026, which sets out how foreign nationals without legal residence in Spain can have their right to health protection and public healthcare recognised.

The PP also backed ending the extraordinary regularisation process. It did not support Vox’s central demand for a housing priority based on nationality, nor its call to repatriate migrants without regular status.

Row after Vox speaker’s remarks removed

The meeting also erupted into a dispute after the PP chair of the committee ordered remarks by Vox spokesperson Manuela Cañadas about Spain’s central government to be removed from the record. The move came after a request from the PSIB.

Cañadas called the decision an “intolerable” act of parliamentary censorship. She said the Supreme Court had imposed precautionary measures over the electoral effects of certain registrations linked to the so-called ‘grandchildren’s law’, while the procedure is being reviewed by the courts.

The committee also approved a PP proposal urging Spain’s government to review legislation so that changing a registered sex does not harm women’s rights. The initiative calls for changes to Articles 43 and 44 of Law 4/2023, seeking legal safeguards against arbitrary changes of identity.
