In Maó, Menorca, Vox candidate Maribel Cerezo pledges on Friday, 23 October, to pay pensions “whatever it takes”. It is her first public appearance since Vox named her its lead candidate for the Balearic Islands in the 29 November election to Spain’s Congress of Deputies. Vox leader Santiago Abascal is also at the event.

Cerezo says she has lived on the islands for 16 years and belonged to Vox since 2019. She urges voters not to waste a vote and accuses her political opponents of using tricks to stay in power.

Cutting red tape is the first of her three campaign themes. She says farmers and livestock keepers on Menorca should not spend more time on paperwork than in the fields, while self-employed people should not have to wait years for a licence.

Her second theme is what she calls “national priority”. When homes or aid are available, she wants young people from Menorca, long-established families and older people to come first. She does not say how she would secure the pension payments she promises.

Her third theme, “remigration”, is a call for migrants who enter illegally or commit crimes to leave. Cerezo also says she will work in Congress to stop Menorca being a “forgotten island”.
