Balearic Senate race: Vox stands aside for PP

Mallorca and the rest of the Balearic Islands will have no separate Vox candidacy in the 29 November Senate election: the party has struck a deal with the People’s Party (PP). The PP will put an independent proposed by Vox second or third on its Balearic list. Vox leader Santiago Abascal called the deal a “patriotic gesture” on Monday at a party event in Talavera de la Reina, Toledo.

Vox is also dropping its own Senate candidacy in Las Palmas, Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Cádiz, Valencia and Castellón. It will field just one candidate in each of 14 other provinces and run as usual in the remaining 23. The PP, in turn, will not run in Guipúzcoa, Gerona or Tarragona.

The parties want to make better use of right-wing votes. People familiar with the negotiations say PP and Vox hope to win 125 to 140 of the 209 Senate seats being contested on 29 November.
